Van Gogh by Van Eck - Van Gogh by Van Eck
Van Gogh by Van Eck truly is a musical and visual journey into the heart and soul of Dutch painter, Vincent van Gogh, the volatile artistic genius. Diederick van Eck, the popular Dutch recording artist, enlisted the creative talents of two American award-winning musicians, lyricist Pamela Phillips Oland and producer/composer Tom Harriman, to bring to life, through music, the life of Van Gogh, creating an extraordinary visual and musical experience. Months of exhaustive research on Van Gogh's life, fine-tuning of each passion-filled track, and detailed designing of the companion 40-page booklet have resulted in the creation of Van Gogh by Van Eck, a powerful and moving concept album.

The brilliant collaboration of these three musical artists has resulted in a CD filled with music that stirs emotions of love, longing, joy and despair using the artistic masterpieces of Van Gogh to illustrate the tortured life journey of one of the most recognized artists of all time. The beautiful, rich colors and textures of twelve of Van Gogh's masterpieces that are included in the accompanying 40-page book, serve as inspiration for listeners of Van Gogh by Van Eck.

  • BIOGRAPHY OF DIEDERICK VAN ECK

  • Credit for conceptualizing a musical album honoring Vincent van Gogh belongs to fellow Dutchman Diederick Van Eck, a passionate musician and singer who has also enjoyed a rewarding career as an international banker and businessman.

After performing as a "crooner" for audiences around Europe over a number of years, Van Eck decided in the late 1990's to pursue his life-long desire to produce high-quality records and involve himself with music full-time. He set up Private Sound B.V. as his music company. Though he was approached to record by Mercury Records several years earlier and his career path did not permit him the time to dedicate himself to music; in 1998, Van Eck signed with Mercury. He recorded three CDs: "That's It," "With a Wink & a Smile," and "December Feelings." In 2004, Van Eck reached the top of the Dutch Mega 100 chart with his hit record "Back Together on the Beach." Van Eck made numerous guest appearances on Dutch television shows such as Christmas Crackers and Music Mozaik and also garnered significant radio airplay in Holland, France and Belgium.

Van Eck has enjoyed co-starring on stage with Dutch Superstar Laura Fygi, also performing on such diverse Gala shows as "Music Among Friends," and "Wine, Dine, Music and Finance." The late international beer mogul Freddy Heineken, a close music colleague of Van Eck's and a successful musician and composer in his own right, so favored Van Eck's vocal talents, international style & panache, that he playfully dubbed him the "singing banker" of the Netherlands.

While interspersing his musical endeavors, Van Eck achieved a formidable banking background that included Vice President & Manager for Lehman Brothers and Dutch Private Bank Theodoor Gilissen Bankiers in the Netherlands. He developed an alternative Institutional investment network spanning the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Scandinavia and Switzerland, also creating an Art Fund for Gilissen Bankers.

  • BIOGRAPHY OF VINCENT VAN GOGH

  • Born March 30, 1853, in the village of Zundert, and named after a stillborn brother, Vincent van Gogh was one of an austere Dutch cleric's 5 children. After a happy childhood, he first flirted with art at 16, while working at the Hague gallery of Goupil et Cie, with his "Uncle Cent." As yet seeing no talent for artistry in himself, he represented paintings and photogravure reproductions in Brussels, then London, where he experienced his first and perhaps most indelible heartbreak over his landlady's faithless daughter, Eugenia Loyer. He moved on to Paris, lost interest in art and took a job as a boys'-school teacher in Ramsgate, England. Now outside the art world, he started walking all the way to London on weekends and viewing art as an appreciator.

Gripped by religious fervor, Vincent then decided to immerse himself in the trials of coal miners in Belgium's Borinage region. Becoming deeply attached to their needs and miseries, he happily gave away all his worldly goods and even his food to those more needy. He had begun sketching by that time, even early on able to richly capture the eloquence of what his eyes took in, a subject matter that filled hundreds of his works all his life - those who toil in the earth and wield the implements of hard work. His brother Theo became his patron and best friend, Theo's money becoming Vincent's sole support. They began a lifelong correspondence.

From 1880 when Vincent moved to Brussels to study art, until his death July 27, 1890, Vincent pursued his art with an unshakeable fervor and passion, producing hundreds of canvases and drawings. In 1885 in the Hague he painted what is considered his first great canvas, "The Potato Eaters," based on memories of the Borinage. It was not until he moved to Paris in 1886 that he discovered Impressionism, and color, along with young fellow painters such as Renoir, Gauguin, Sisley, Degas, Monet, Pissaro, Emile Bernard and Toulouse-Lautrec. An individualist who didn't "fit in," he left for Arles in 1887, where in the Southern French sun he ardently painted in his Yellow House, and-pursuing his impassioned desire to create an artist's colony there-enjoined Paul Gauguin, whom he admired greatly, to come to paint together. After 2 months, Gauguin broke away from him, and in a punishing fit of anguish and despair, Vincent famously cut a part of his ear off. Sinking into a kind of madness, feeling a burden on Theo who now had a wife and a son on the way, his last months-spent in the asylum at St. Remy and then in Auvers-were filled with periods of intense painting, followed by weeks of depression. Having sold only one painting in his lifetime-his paintings lying in unappreciated stacks on Theo's floor-and having been blessed neither with love nor happiness, he fatally shot himself. And that was, perhaps, not an end, but a beginning. For though Theo sadly died 6 months later, his widow Jo van Gogh, after burying Theo side-by-side with his beloved brother Vincent in Auvers, made it her life's work to see that that Vincent's art lived on.
